How the Toastmaster's Program Works
Toastmasters International was started in 1924 in Santa Ana, California. It has grown to become the largest organization in the world to help people develop their communication and leadership skills. Toastmasters International has clubs in over 90 countries. There are over 11,000 clubs and over 200,000 people involved with this program.
We are part of District Two which runs from Kent in the south to the Canadian boarder in the north. There are over 150 clubs in our district. You can visit our district web site at: http://www.toastmasters-d2.org/ to view a map of their locations.
Each club has its own personality but every club strives to maintain a membership of 20+ members. That is the magic number for a healthy vibrate club!
Most clubs meet weekly but there are exceptions. Some clubs meet every other week or just once a month. It depends on the goals and dynamics of the club. Our club meets every Friday morning at 6:30A. That means we are determined!
There are three types of toastmasters clubs. A community club is open to everyone eighteen years or older. A company or organizational club is open to employees or members of their organization. The last type of club but one of the most exciting is the specialty club. These clubs have their own set of
requirements.
Here is how the process works: A toastmasters meeting has roles that help the club members develop and hone their communication and leadership skills. Each week the meeting roles rotate so every member has the opportunity to learn by being involved.
The program revolves around two key training manuals, the Competent Communication manual and the Competent Leadership manual. There are projects in each manual to help our members develop their communication and leadership skills. They receive help from other club members. People learn more by teaching so we are always sharing our knowledge. It is one of the key elements that help us develop our interpersonal communication skills.
We are an organization of volunteers. There are only a handful of paid employees at our world headquarters to help manage our organization. All of the clubs, areas, divisions, districts, and regions are run by volunteers.
Some people join and learn the basic skills that will help them in their personal or professional lives. Then, they move on taking those skills with them. Other people stay involved, grow their skills and share their knowledge with other members. There is another group of people who step into leadership roles outside of their home clubs. They take the program to a higher level and actively share their knowledge by helping promote the leadership and communication program by building stronger toastmasters clubs and starting new toastmasters clubs. They know they are helping build a better world when people communicate with one another.
Once a member has completed the first two manuals they have the opportunity to work with advanced projects that reach into numerous professions. But – it all starts by joining a toastmasters club.
We hope you will visit us. We will do our best to make you feel welcome. Our club isn’t big on following rules but we have and do develop some of the best speakers in our district!
A toastmaster membership is open to anyone over 18 years of age. There is a new member fee of $20.00 and $27.00 dues to Toastmasters International every six months due in April and October. The $27.00 is prorated by the month you join. Our club dues are $40.00 every six months and include the $27.00 for Toastmasters International. We don’t charge any club dues for new members until the next dues period. This is a very cost effective program.
You will receive a new member kit after you join. It will contain the Competent Communicator manual and the Competent Leadership manual. Additionally, you will receive other support materials and start receiving the Toastmasters magazine.
The most important thing you will receive is support in becoming a better communicator and support in developing your leadership skills. Please consider visiting our club or another toastmasters club.
